Life has a way of throwing curveballs at us when we least expect them. There are moments when the weight of our struggles feels unbearable, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we are being punished or that we will never overcome the obstacles in our path. Yet, if we take a step back and look at our lives from a broader perspective, we might realize that struggle isn’t the enemy—it’s a necessary part of growth, transformation, and ultimately, the realization of our blessings.

The truth is, we often stand in the way of our own blessings, not because they aren’t meant for us, but because we struggle to embrace the challenges that are essential for our growth. Struggle, as paradoxical as it may seem, is part of the divine design of life. When we’re experiencing hardship, it’s easy to focus on the pain or the apparent lack of progress. But what if, instead of resisting those difficult times, we leaned into them? What if we learned to trust that, even when things seem bleak, something greater is unfolding behind the scenes?

The Gift in Struggle

Struggle teaches us resilience. It forces us to grow in ways we never would have imagined. When life tests us, we uncover strengths within ourselves we didn’t know existed. It’s in the hard moments—when we feel like we’re at our lowest—that we discover a well of courage, patience, and determination we never thought we had. It’s in the darkest valleys that we develop the perspective to truly appreciate the peaks.

The famous author C.S. Lewis once said, “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” How true this is! Often, we look at our struggles as things to avoid or eliminate, but they are often the very things that shape our future. Our challenges bring us closer to the people we are meant to be. Without those tests, without those failures, we wouldn’t have the capacity to appreciate the victories, the light, or the blessings when they arrive.

Faith and the Power of the Unseen

There’s a deep, unspoken truth in life: sometimes, we don’t see the good that is coming to us, not because it isn’t there, but because it isn’t visible yet. Faith is the quiet assurance that something greater than ourselves is at work. It’s the belief in things not seen, the trust that even when we can’t see the way forward, something beautiful is unfolding.

Whether you identify as religious or spiritual, many people have experienced moments where, looking back, they see how the challenges they faced led them to a place of profound growth and understanding. There’s a reason that “faith” is often spoken about in times of uncertainty—because it is in those moments, when we feel lost, that faith reminds us that there’s more to the story than what we see in front of us.

In these moments, it’s important to remember that what may feel like a setback is sometimes a redirection. Life, in its mysterious way, is preparing us for something far better than what we could have imagined. What we interpret as failure could be a setup for success—a process we have to go through to become who we’re truly meant to be.

Gratitude for the Darkness

It’s easy to be grateful when things are going well. We’re thankful for the good health, the steady job, the happy relationships. But what about when things are not going well? Can we also find gratitude in those times? Can we be thankful for the struggles, the challenges, the darkness?

I believe we can, and we should. The darkness teaches us to appreciate the light. It’s in the moments of deep struggle that we learn to recognize the power of joy, peace, and contentment when they do come. Imagine how easy it would be to take blessings for granted if we didn’t know what it was like to feel without them.

Gratitude for the darker times isn’t about ignoring the pain or pretending that everything is fine. It’s about recognizing that through hardship, we grow. We become more compassionate, more understanding, more resilient. We develop a deeper sense of gratitude for the things we used to take for granted. And in this process, we cultivate a strength that can only come from facing the storms of life head-on.

Growing Through What We Go Through

Ultimately, life is about growth. We are meant to evolve, to learn, to adapt. The struggles we face aren’t there to defeat us—they are there to refine us. Every time we face a challenge, we have a choice: we can give in to defeat, or we can use that challenge as an opportunity to grow. When we choose growth, we choose the path that leads us to better versions of ourselves.

Through each struggle, we develop new skills, insights, and emotional intelligence that enable us to navigate future challenges with greater ease. And when we approach life with a mindset of growth, we begin to see opportunities in places we once saw only obstacles.

So, instead of focusing on the difficulty of the moment, let’s shift our perspective. Let’s ask ourselves: What can I learn from this experience? How can I grow from this challenge? How can I use this to become a better version of myself?

The Blessing in the Struggle

Looking back on the challenges we’ve faced, it’s easy to see how they shaped who we are today. Some of our biggest blessings may have been disguised as hardships in the beginning. The job that felt like a dead end may have led to a more fulfilling career later. The relationship that ended may have opened the door for a deeper connection with someone else. The illness or setback may have forced us to slow down and reevaluate our priorities, leading us to a healthier, more balanced life.

In the midst of struggle, we can’t always see how things will unfold, but we can trust that, just as the sun rises after the darkest nights, so too will brighter days follow our challenges. Our struggles don’t define us—they refine us, helping us become who we are meant to be, ready to embrace the blessings that are on their way.

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, has roots that trace back to ancient Celtic festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival of Samhain. This festival marked the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter, a time when it was believed that the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred. Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming spirits.

When Irish immigrants brought these traditions to America in the 19th century, Halloween began to take shape as we know it today. The blend of different cultures, along with the influence of the burgeoning American celebration of harvest festivals, transformed Halloween into a community-centered holiday. By the early 20th century, it evolved into a more family-friendly event, characterized by activities like trick-or-treating, costume parties, and spooky decorations.

As the holiday gained popularity, it became an occasion for fun rather than fear. The spooky tales and ghost stories that accompanied Halloween became a way to entertain and engage, ensuring that the eerie spirit of the holiday remained intact.

A Spooky Story: The Phantom of Willow Creek

In the small town of Willow Creek, tales of a ghostly figure wandering the woods after dark have circulated for generations. Legend has it that the spirit belongs to a young woman named Eliza, who mysteriously disappeared on Halloween night over a century ago.

Eliza was known for her beauty and kindness, often helping those in need. On that fateful night, she was seen heading into the woods to gather firewood for the local orphanage. Hours passed, and she never returned. Search parties scoured the forest, but no trace of her was found. Locals believed she had encountered a witch who cursed her to roam the woods for eternity.

Every year on Halloween, the townsfolk would hear whispers in the wind and see a flickering light among the trees. Those brave enough to venture into the woods claimed to have seen Eliza’s ghost, dressed in a flowing white gown, her eyes filled with sorrow. Many who encountered her said they felt a chill, as if the very essence of winter had descended upon them.

To this day, on Halloween night, residents leave candles in their windows, hoping to guide Eliza’s spirit back home, even if just for one night.

A Legend more local to me: Goatman

The story of the Goatman in Cleburne, Texas, is a local legend that has intrigued and terrified residents for years. This urban legend typically describes a creature that is part human and part goat, often depicted with the body of a man and the head of a goat, and is said to roam the woods near Cleburne.

The Legend

According to various accounts, the Goatman is said to have originated from a tragic incident involving a goat farmer. Some versions claim he was a hermit who lived in the woods, known for his affinity with goats. After a series of unfortunate events—like the loss of his livestock or a betrayal by the townspeople—he transformed into the Goatman, seeking vengeance on those who wronged him.

Sightings of the Goatman often describe a hulking figure moving through the shadows, with glowing eyes and a haunting presence. Reports frequently mention eerie sounds, like screams or strange noises, echoing through the night, adding to the legend’s chilling atmosphere.

My own family has always enjoyed celebrating my mom’s birthday along with the Halloween tradition of Trick-or-treating. The years since her passing have been different but we still gather together and the oldest kids take the younger kids trick-or-treating. This year the youngest kids are 15 and 16 years old and I still support them trick-or-treating as opposed to the things teens did back in the 80s and 90s. I know they will enjoy the candy and we will all share a meal and memories and laugh and take photographs. It will be different from the past but we come together because we are family.

NAVIGATING THE CHALLENGES OF PARENTING A TEEN BOY

Parenting a teenage boy can be a rollercoaster ride filled with highs and lows. As they transition from childhood to adulthood, boys face unique challenges that can impact their mental health. It’s crucial for parents to be aware of these issues and to engage in open conversations about feelings, pressures, and the digital world.

The Challenges of Parenting a Teen Boy

One moment, you might find your son excitedly sharing his dreams for the future, and the next, he could be engulfed in stress from school, friendships, and societal expectations. Teenage boys often struggle with expressing their emotions, which can lead to misunderstandings and feelings of isolation. Unfortunately, he is and isn’t the same sweet boy who wouldn’t leave the room without a hug and an “I love you.” He is that sweet little boy that you have loved and nurtured, but he isn’t because he is changing, his body is foreign to him in some ways. He doesn’t even know sometimes why he does or says things. We can chalk it up to part of growing up and make ourselves aware that parenting teen boys isn’t easy, but keeping a few things in mind we can bring forth kind, loving, and healthy young men.

While discussions around mental health have become more mainstream, there are still aspects that remain underexplored. For instance, statistics show that suicide is the second leading cause of death among boys aged 15 to 19. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2021, nearly 12% of high school boys reported seriously considering suicide, with around 5% having attempted it.

Furthermore, self-harm is alarmingly prevalent among teenage boys. A 2020 study found that approximately 7% of boys had engaged in self-injurious behavior. These statistics reveal a hidden crisis that isn’t often addressed openly, especially in conversations about teenage mental health.

The Impact of Bullying

Bullying can exacerbate mental health issues among teens. The National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) reports that about 20% of students aged 12-18 experienced bullying. Boys are often targeted for their interests, appearance, or perceived weaknesses, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and despair. Sometimes it is even within their own friend group and the boys themselves don’t even realize the harm they are causing. I don’t think any teen boy wants to see his friend in despair. 

Breaking the Silence

Despite the alarming statistics, many parents feel unprepared to discuss mental health, bullying, or the pressures their sons face. The stigma surrounding mental health often keeps families from seeking help or initiating conversations. It’s essential to break this silence, normalize discussions about emotions, and encourage boys to express their feelings without judgment. That last part is hard because many of us have been around or seen the whole alpha/beta male nonsense and hear “boys will be boys” crap that essentially excuses the crappy behavior, we cannot let that continue. Real men do cry, real men do wear pink, and real men do many things that may have once been looked at as “woman’s work.”

The Role of the Internet

In today’s digital age, the internet plays a significant role in the lives of teenagers. While it can be a source of information and connection, it also poses risks. Cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and the pressure to maintain a perfect online persona can take a toll on a teen’s mental health. Even if you cannot keep up with the ever changing digital landscape that your child is involved in, do not keep your head in the sand. Research the apps your teen is using and familiarize yourself with it enough that you can be prepared should you need to intervene.

Preparing Your Teen for the Digital World

As parents, preparing our children for the digital landscape is crucial. Here are some strategies to consider:

  1. Open Dialogue: Foster an environment where your teen feels comfortable discussing their online experiences. Ask about their favorite apps, what they enjoy, and any negative experiences they might encounter. Snapchat has had a n uptick in scammers convincing kids to send photos and then trying to blackmail them for money. Discord has its dark places as does Twitch. Be mindful of what your family is consuming. 
  2. Educate About Cyberbullying: Discuss the realities of cyberbullying and the importance of kindness online. Encourage them to speak to you or another trusted adult if they witness or experience bullying. 
  3. Set Boundaries: Establish rules for internet use that promote balance, such as time limits and appropriate content guidelines. Make sure your teen knows that just like there are terrible places in the world that they might want to avoid, there are places on the internet that should be avoided. 
  4. Model Healthy Behavior: Demonstrate positive online behavior by managing your own digital presence and discussing your experiences.
  5. Teach Critical Thinking: Help your teen develop critical thinking skills regarding online content. Encourage them to question the accuracy of information and the motives behind social media posts.
  6. Mental Health Resources: Provide information about mental health resources and support systems. Make it clear that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.

The Connection Between Food and Mental Health

As a 49-year-old mother of five, I’ve spent years juggling the chaos of family life, a career, and trying to stay healthy. Over time, I’ve learned that what I put on my plate does far more than just feed my body—it feeds my mind, too. Our daily diet plays an integral role in how we feel, think, and cope with the ups and downs of life. Here’s what I’ve discovered about the relationship between the food we eat and mental health, from my perspective as a busy mom navigating life’s many demands.

The Busy Mom Diet: When Convenience Comes First

Let’s face it—when you’re raising kids, and juggling their homework and activities, meal planning often takes a back seat to convenience. I’ve been there, reaching for quick fixes like processed snacks, fast food, and sugary treats just to get through the day. But as I hit my 40s, I began to notice that not only was my energy tanking, but my mood was all over the place. I felt anxious, irritable, and, honestly, a little down more often than I’d like to admit. 

It wasn’t just the physical toll of running a household; I began to suspect that my diet was playing a big role in how I was feeling mentally. And my doctor warned me that my A1C was putting me in a borderline state. I had to take a look at what I was eating and how it made me FEEL. This was my suspicion, what I was eating was affecting my mood swings and my sugar levels.

The Science Behind Food and Mood

It turns out, I wasn’t wrong. Research shows that the food we eat has a direct impact on our mental health. A diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and mood swings. In contrast, a balanced diet rich in whole foods—think fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats—provides the brain with the nutrients it needs to function optimally.

Gut Health: The Second Brain

When the girls were playing soccer, one of the soccer parents introduced me to an idea about the gut-brain connection. Did you know that your gut is sometimes called your “second brain”? The gut is home to trillions of bacteria that help regulate not only digestion but also mood. These bacteria produce neurotransmitters like serotonin, the “feel-good” chemical that plays a key role in keeping our mood stable.

When I started focusing on feeding my gut with fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, I noticed a significant improvement in my mood. I also incorporated shots of kefir sometimes to help the gut biome. Although it wasn’t overnight, a few weeks of eating more mindfully, I felt calmer, more focused, and better equipped to handle the stress of daily life. And sometimes we still ate processed foods, but I was more mindful of the fuel we were putting in our bodies. 

Sugar and Mental Health: A Love-Hate Relationship

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from raising kids and being around kids, it is that sugar is everywhere! It is the big ugly thing that hides in so many things we eat! It’s in snacks, drinks, and even foods we wouldn’t expect, like bread and sauces. For years, I leaned on sugary treats or sugary drinks with caffeine to get that quick energy boost, especially during the long days of parenting. But what I didn’t realize was how sugar affects mental health.

Sugar may give you an instant lift, but it’s followed by a crash that can leave you feeling irritable, tired, and foggy. Over time, these fluctuations in blood sugar can contribute to symptoms of anxiety and depression. Once I started cutting back on sugar and replacing it with healthier alternatives like fruits, nuts, and even dark chocolate (yes, I still need my treats!), I felt more balanced both mentally and physically.

Omega-3s: The Brain’s Best Friend

One dietary change that helped make a difference for me was incorporating more omega-3 fatty acids into my meals and snacks. These healthy fats, found in foods like salmon, chia seeds, and walnuts, are essential for brain health. Omega-3s help reduce inflammation in the brain and have been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Making simple swaps—like adding a handful of walnuts or a tablespoon of chia seeds to my morning oatmeal or cooking salmon or making a salmon salad once a week started to become routine. And honestly, I could feel the change. My mind felt clearer, and I was able to manage stress in ways I hadn’t been able to before. I do not always keep all of these ingredients on hand, but I do notice the difference when I haven’t been keeping up with watching what I eat. I feel it and then remember to add them to the grocery list. This isn’t a passing “diet” it is just making small changes to give your body the fuel it needs to operate at its best and occasionally we lapse back into the bad eating habits. When you do that just course correct and begin again, it’s not a failure, just a backslide.

The Power of Routine and Self-Care

As a busy mom, balancing everything can be a challenge. I know that self-care often falls to the bottom of the to-do list. But I’ve learned that prioritizing what I eat is one of the most important forms of self-care I can practice. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming; even small changes can have a big impact.

I now make an effort to prepare balanced meals, drink plenty of water, and include foods that nourish both my body and mind. And if I am missing something I also take a multivitamin to try to keep my body functioning at its best. Eating regularly has kept my blood sugar stable, which has been a huge game-changer for my energy and mood. No more need for the snickers in the afternoons because I was getting “hangry.” I also snack on things that are better for me than a candy bar, maybe some almonds or sunflower seeds and dried cranberries, just enough to get me to dinner. You can do what works for you and your tastes, read the labels.

Setting an Example for My Kids

The absolute best motivator for me has been setting a good example for my children. I wanted them to understand that what they eat doesn’t just affect how they look or their physical health—it affects how they feel emotionally and mentally. Encouraging them to make healthy food choices and teaching them the importance of balance and moderation has always been a “thing” in this household. Sometimes my insistence that they give me two bites of anything I cooked led to them discovering that they actually did like the weird looking stuff or the green stuff. I really did raise some of the least picky eaters. 

Final Thoughts

At 49, I’m still learning, growing, and making changes to support my health and well-being. But one thing I know for sure is that the connection between food and mental health is real. As a mother, wife, and woman juggling many roles, the food I eat has become one of the most powerful tools I have to support my mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall happiness.
