Weddings are great, Marriage: The Work, The Woes, and The Real Thing

Happy Anniversary!!

Today, my husband and I are celebrating our anniversary!

Our story didn’t start yesterday. We knew each other way back as teenagers, but then life did what life does—it pulled us down different roads, through different seasons, and across different miles. Years later, fate brought us back into the same circle, and we’ve been walking side by side ever since.

When people look at marriages, especially from the outside, it’s easy to romanticize things. But if you’ve been in the trenches of a long-term relationship, you know the truth: Weddings are easy, loving is natural, but marriage is real, intentional work.

We Are Everything You’ve Heard (And So Much More)

Let’s be honest: my husband is no saint, and I’m certainly no angel.

We struggle, we fuss, and we have our fair share of loud, stubborn arguments. We are human, imperfect, and flawed. People might have their opinions or think they know our story, but at the end of the day, their opinion is none of our business.

What matters—the only thing that matters—is what happens when the dust settles:

  • When something big happens: Whether it is the absolute best news of our lives or a devastating blow that knocks the wind out of us, he is the first person I look for, and I am the first person he seeks out.
  • When life gets heavy: Through health scares, family losses, career shifts, and every life-altering storm we’ve faced since we said “I do,” we show up for each other.
  • When we come back together: Even on the days I think he’s being a complete jerk, the anger fades and leaves behind a deep, undeniable truth: I love this man with everything I have. And when we quiet down and look at each other, we recognize just how fortunate we are to hold this kind of love.

Looking Ahead to Tulsa

Next year, we are planning a vow renewal just outside of Tulsa.

I never needed the big, flashy spectacle of a massive wedding. That’s never been my style. But I do want the memories. I want the crisp photos, our kids standing beside us, and a small, cherished circle of close friends gathered together to toast to how far we’ve come.

We’ve earned every single step of this journey.

To My Husband

We aren’t done yet, baby. Not even close.

Thank you for holding my hand when the road gets rough, for being my soundboard through the good and the bad, and for building a life with me that is uniquely ours.

Happy Anniversary. I love you more.
