The Friday Exhale: Learning the Grace of Standing Still

If you’re reading this today, I want to invite you to do something simple before you read another word: take a deep, full breath, and let your shoulders drop.
Fridays are usually meant for wrapping things up, checking off the final boxes on our to-do lists, and sliding into the weekend with a sense of accomplishment. But every now and then, life handed us a week where the biggest accomplishment on the schedule was simply taking care of ourselves—and learning to be okay with that.
This week has been a big deal for me. Yesterday was my very first iron infusion—a step I’ve been waiting to take for a while now. While my hematologist promises that by the end of this month I’ll start feeling back to my usual, vibrant self (and I am holding onto that “yay!” with both hands!), right now? Today? My body is doing the quiet, heavy work of processing, healing, and rebuilding behind the scenes.
Coupled with being a little further into my HRT journey, my body is undergoing a complete reset. And if there’s one thing a body in reset mode demands, it’s grace.
When “Productivity” Means Being Still
We live in a world that praises the hustle, the endless daily output, and the constant motion. But true wellness isn’t just about how fast we can run or how much we can carry; it’s about knowing when to set the load down.
When you’re navigating health shifts, medical treatments, or hormonal transitions, your energy shifts too. Some days you’re ready to conquer the world; other days, your body asks you to pull back the blankets, pour a warm drink, and rest.
And here is the truth we all need to hear more often: Resting is not failing. Being still is not losing time. It is the very foundation that allows you to rebuild your strength for the chapters ahead.
3 Ways to Practice the “Friday Exhale”
If you are in a season where your body is asking for a pause, here is your official permission slip to give yourself some grace today:
Trade Expectations for Appreciation: Instead of focusing on what you didn’t get done today, focus on what your body did do. It is working hard to heal, adjust, and protect you. Give it credit for that invisible work.
Close the Mental Tabs: Put the big projects on pause. The emails will keep, the dirty dishes can wait a bit, and the world will keep spinning if you step off the carousel for an afternoon.
Just Breathe: Literally. Take five minutes to sit comfortably, put your hand over your heart, and just listen to your breath. Remind yourself: I am right where I need to be.
Looking Ahead with Hope
Healing takes time, and transitions aren’t always comfortable while you’re in the middle of them. But there is so much hope in knowing that brighter, higher-energy days are waiting just around the corner.
So today, I’m celebrating the small victory of taking step one. I’m giving myself permission to feel a little yucky, to move slow, to be still, and to just exhale.
How are you giving yourself grace this Friday? If your body is asking for a break, let this be your reminder to listen to it. Drop a quiet note in the comments below—I’d love to check in with you!
