Friday Exhale: Rebuilding, Gratitude, and Learning to Exhale

Fridays are meant for slowing down, taking stock, and dropping the heavy expectations we’ve been carrying all week.

If you’ve been walking through a season where your body is demanding a reset, you know that progress rarely looks like a straight line. Some days feel full of momentum, and other days are simply about protecting your energy and letting your body do the quiet, unseen work of healing.

As we head into this weekend, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it really means to rebuild—not in big, dramatic leaps, but in the small, practical choices we make right at home, surrounded by the people who ground us.

Listening When the Battery Is Low

Rebuilding physical stamina after a health flare-up takes a kind of patience that none of us naturally have.

When your iron levels are gradually coming back up and your body is adjusting to big changes, your social and physical battery can drain without warning. The temptation is always to push past the fatigue—to pretend you have endless energy because there’s always something that needs to be done.

The biggest lesson this week has been learning to stop before the crash. Admitting to myself and my family, “My battery is low right now, and I need to rest,” isn’t giving up. It’s honoring the recovery process so tomorrow can be a little brighter.

Finding Joy in the New Staples

There’s a quiet satisfaction in taking control of what goes into your body and making it work for your whole household.

Shifting away from old, quick-fix comfort foods hasn’t meant giving up warmth or taste in the kitchen—it just means getting creative. It’s finding out that whole grain breads packed with seeds and protein can be just as comforting, and that a batch of dark chocolate brownies made with black beans and bananas still brings everyone to the table with a smile.

When you reframe food as genuine fuel and protection for your heart and body, the kitchen stops feeling like a place of restriction and starts feeling like where the healing happens.

Grateful for the Hand to Hold and the Words to Share

More than anything this week, I’m overwhelmed by gratitude.

I’m grateful that I have this space to write honestly about the struggle—to put words to the messy, awkward parts of navigating a new normal.

I’m grateful for my care team. Even with all the hiccups, missteps, and endless appointments along the way, having medical professionals in my corner who are helping me piece together the puzzle is a blessing.

And I am so deeply grateful for my husband, who holds my hand through every step of this journey. Having a steady partner to walk beside you when the road gets steep changes everything.

A Gentle Weekend Intent

If you are carrying your own physical, emotional, or mental fatigue into this Friday, let this weekend be a real pause:

  • Take a walk and breathe: Step outside, soak in the cooler autumn air, let your lungs fill up, and just move at a gentle pace.
  • Practice a little gratitude for the hard stuff: Be grateful even for the annoying symptoms, the doctor calls, and the dietary shifts—because having those things to manage means we are still here, alive, and getting the chance to figure it out.
  • Remember your strength: We don’t have to have everything solved by Monday.

Exhale. We can do hard things.

Take a deep breath in, let it all out, and have a peaceful, gentle weekend.
